Acountability Pillar

Reporting to Jurisdictions

Each May, every school authority receives a report from Alberta Education of all the most recent data, including the current jurisdiction survey results, objective measures of student outcomes and the previous year's Provincial Achievement Test and Diploma Exam results.

The report includes an evaluation of each measure on achievement, which compares results to a consistent standard, and improvement, which measures current performance against previous results. As well, a combined evaluation for each measure and category is provided in an Accountability Pillar Overall Summary.

How school jurisdictions use this information
The data and initial evaluation that jurisdictions receive in May 2006 will help determine priorities for improving learning outcomes. It also provides a means of sharing results with their communities, ensuring the system is open and accountable to all Albertans. Provincial results on the Accountability Pillar measures are reported publicly on Alberta Education’s website.

Jurisdictions will use their evaluations to identify areas requiring improvement. Using Accountability Pillar information, school jurisdictions will also develop strategies for their Three-Year Education Plans to improve results in those areas where performance has not improved or has declined. Alberta school jurisdictions post their three-year plans on their school board web site by June 30 each year.

In addition, school boards continue to be accountable for meeting the education needs of all students, for ensuring provincial policy, legislation, regulations and standards are met, and for reporting on the allocation and use of funds.
