Certificate of School Completion
The 2008 – 2009 Certificate of School Completion in special education will be awarded to students with significant cognitive disabilities who meet the qualification criteria listed below. To receive the certificate, a student must be nominated by his or her school

All current nominations must be made electronically. The submission period is from April 01 to December 31 of the current year of school completion.

Nominations for June 2008 Certificate of School Completion must be completed using the paper format, then mailed or faxed to Alberta Education.

Entering the Alberta Student Number (ASN) produces a completed nomination form on-line. The school must supply the principal’s e-mail address and confirmation that the criteria apply. The form is then Saved or Submitted by the school.

If an exception to the criteria exists, an explanation must be provided in the Exception box.

The status of a nomination can be viewed on the school’s Extranet. Status includes Saved, Accepted, Pending, Denied, Returned, Approved and Printed.

Certificates for approved nominations will be mailed to the student’s home address.

For nominations received before September 15th, Certificates will be mailed in early October when Diplomas and other Certificates are mailed by Alberta Education.

Alberta Education will continue to accept, beyond September 15th, nominations for the Certificate of School Completion for current and past years, beginning with school completion in June 2008.

All Saved nominations need to be submitted by schools in order to be reviewed by Alberta Education.

If a nomination is returned, please provide information requested in the return reason and submit again.

If a nomination is denied, the reason for denial will be provided. Denials can be appealed.

Qualification Criteria

By the 2008/2009 school year, this individual had been a student for at least twelve years (is 17 years of age by March 1, 2009)

2008-2009 is the student’s last year of school programming

This student has participated in special education programming (has been identified with one of the following special education codes at the time of school completion: 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 51, 52, 53, 55, 56, 58, 59). If coded 42, 44, 45, 46, 53, 55, 56, 58, 59, student must also have a significant cognitive delay
- This student has worked toward goals and objectives in an Individualized Program Plan that is consistent with AB Education requirements

This student did not achieve credits in any of the following High School courses:

- Diplôme d'études secondaires de L'Alberta
- High School Equivalency Diploma
- Diplôme d'equivalence d'études secondaires
- Certificate of Achievement (IOP)
- Certificate of High School Achievement (Knowledge and Employability)
- Certificat de Réussite d'études secondaires (Connaissances et employabilité)
- Alberta High School Diploma
- It is verified that credits achieved by this student were not towards a Certificate of High School Achievement (Knowledge and Employability) or Diploma

The Nomination Request Form (07-08) must be printed, completed and mailed / faxed to Special Education Branch (Main Floor 10044 – 108 Str. Edmonton AB T5J 5E6 Fax: (780) 422-2039).
