Certificate of School Completion

For the first time this year, some senior high school students with special education needs will be eligible for a Certificate of School Completion in special education.  To receive the certificate, a student must be nominated by his or her school.

Criteria

A student eligible for the Certificate of School Completion in special education:

  • has been a student over a period of at least twelve years
  • is in the last year of his/her school program
  • has participated in special education programming
  • has worked toward goals and objectives in an individualized program plan that is consistent with Standards for Special Education, Amended June 2004
  • is not able to achieve one of the following due to significant cognitive disabilities:
    • Alberta High School Diploma
    • Diplôme d’études secondaires de L’Alberta
    • High School Equivalency Diploma
    • Diplôme d’equivalence d’études secondaires
    • Certificate of Achievement (IOP)
    • Certificate of High School Achievement (Knowledge and Employability)
    • Certificat de Réussite d’études secondaires (Connaissances et employabilité

The school must complete a nomination form for each qualifying student and submit it between May 15 and June 30, 2008.  For 2008, the nomination deadline is extended to September 12. Certificates will be awarded at the same time as other Alberta Education diplomas and certificates
