Special Education in Private Schools

Requirements for Special Education in Accredited-Funded Private Schools describes requirements for providing educational programming to students identified with special education needs in accredited-funded private schools in Alberta. An accredited-funded private school is an accredited private school as defined in the School Act and receives a grant under the Learning Grants Regulation.

A Designated Special Education Private School (DSEPS) is an accredited-funded private school given special approval and funding by Alberta Education. The sole purpose of the school is to serve students diagnosed with mild, moderate or severe disabilities. The school must provide programming to its students consistent with Standards for Special Education, Amended June 2004, except that private school parents cannot request a review of a school decision by the Minister of Education.

Funding guidelines for accredited-funded private schools and DSEPS are included in the Funding Manual for School Authorities. The Funding Manual glossary contains a list of DSEPS.
