Technology – Alberta SuperNet

Students and Educators Benefit from SuperNet

Alberta Education is a leader in online learning. Now through SuperNet, learners throughout Alberta are able to take advantage of high bandwidth and increased access to realize recent trends in learning technology and online learning. They will benefit by gaining the high-tech skills and knowledge required for the future. SuperNet enhances a learning system that is already responsive to the unique needs of learners and provides further flexibility and choice.

Benefits:

  • Access to learning resources through SuperNet provides support to help educators address the demand for unique programs in remote areas.
  • SuperNet means that rural students can receive the same educational opportunities available in urban centres through online learning without leaving their own communities.
  • SuperNet allows teacher specialists and remote video resources to be made available directly to students in schools, no matter where they live in the province.
  • Online learning resources can also facilitate students working at their own pace or otherwise customizing their learning experience.
  • Teachers can facilitate their own professional growth with increased access to teaching and professional development resources.
  • SuperNet provides learners and educators all over the province with opportunities for collaboration.
  • SuperNet provides equity between urban and rural learning institutions by providing high-speed networking at reasonable prices. Now the cost for high-speed networking will be the same throughout the province, regardless of where a learning site is located.

SuperNet Helps Enhance Opportunities in Kindergarten to Grade 12

  • Alberta Education has undertaken recent initiatives to provide online resources that will be further enhanced by the availability of SuperNet. For example:

    • The LearnAlberta.ca website supports lifelong learning by providing curriculum-specific, digital content for use by teachers, students and parents in the form of streamed video, concept lessons, interactive applications, and other resources.
    • The resources found at the LearnAlberta.ca website can enhance what students are learning in the classroom with resources such as curriculum-based concept lessons and a comprehensive Online Reference Centre and more. The site will also include access to National Geographic education materials, a source of information that is respected world-wide. Teachers can use the online resources to enhance their lesson plans and students will find them helpful as they do their homework or review what has been covered in class. The online resources also offer parents great examples of what their children are learning in school. These online resources can be used in the classroom or at home and support learning in many curricular areas, as well as develop valuable information and communication technology skills.
