Our day begins with a race to Beat Beethoven as students from Kindergarten to Grade Six run to the famous Fifth Symphony. Afterwards, students, parents, and teachers are invited to tour our Art Gallery, for which each student created a piece of art to reflect their developing understanding of our school-wide inquiry into CHANGE.

Horizon School students participate in regular Art classes on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons with Mrs. Jorgensen. Students also enjoy Art Sparks classes on Friday afternoons when a volunteer artist comes in to work with the students. Event: Making A Difference with Art
Students are creating a large mural in the school entry way to illustrate the school theme for this year, "Go Make A Difference". Students will begin by creating pencil sketches of buildings in our community, learning to use value with 2B pencils to enhance their artwork. Over the year, as students complete social justice projects, they will apply tinting and other techniques to colour the mural. The mural will become brighter and more inticrate throughout the year as students use art techniques they learng to add to the mural. This will reflect how students have brightened the community through their good works.

All grades 4 to 8 over 300 students make a tracing of their hands and then cutting out the pattern. Then they use graphic design for self expression around their first name. Whole school's hands assembled into a Unity Flower for a large wall display creating an semi-abstract carnation.

Two Hills School students from Kindergarten-grade 6 made their way to the heart of town to adorn the streets with art. Armed with sidewalk chalk, each grade left their mark, drawing horses, flowers, rainbows and a vast array of other creative masterpieces.

Our school is celebrating International Day of Peace on September 21st in conjunction to Alberta Arts Days as we create a visual public statement about peace. On Friday September 18, describing their thoughts and visual ideas of peace, every student will create an individual pinwheel. Then on Monday September 21st we will be creating a public visual installation outside of over 600 pinwheels.

Local artisans and traditional crafters have contributed some of their creations to be put on display in our school library. Children from K-12 were asked to contribute art work they've made this year. Contests were conducted in each classroom and the winners get to have their artwork on display. Both community-at-large and school community are contributing to this event.

Event: Exquisite Corpse
The grade 7 and 8 art classes will work collaboratively to create a giant exquisite corpse flipbook. At the beginning of the class the students will be asked to brainstorm a list of characters that they would like to include in the flipbook. Then each student will create a drawing of a head, a torso or legs. At the end of the class period the drawings will be complied into a flipbook. The flipbook will be displayed in the front foyer for the entire school to enjoy.

Currently, we have placed an art exhibit at our Central Office highlighting the students’ pieces. Other activities such as: students are playing bells for their peers, a readers’ theatre production with our Grade 5 students, shared novel reading with our librarian, and students are building puppets. Additionally , our students will be involved in culinary arts activities – where they will set a menu, buy the food and then prepare it. Students are also involved in developing a video presentation, building models, making a movie, studying Georgia O'Keefe, cartooning, participating in a band workshop and designing and building the props for our pep rallies.

Event: Window Wonder - Fentre sur l''art
Teachers will feature local artists from Jasper and show some of the original paintings in the school. Some classes will visit the Jasper Yellowhead Museum and Archives to vies local artist Jane Shepherd's painting show. This will give an awareness of local artists and a viewing opportunity to students. All students will be given the opportunity to create art on Friday when students will be invited to paint their classroom windows and sidewalks. This way the whole community may view the art work done in the school by all students helping celebrate this great event.

The Grade Four art classes will celebrate Alberta Arts Days, Fall and Vincent Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" by: reading about him, viewing his art and finally painting their own sunflowers. Our creations will be shared with the Crestwood School families through displays on bulletin boards in classrooms, hallways and the library.

Each class plans to recognize Arts Days on Sept. 18th by celebrating peaceful communities. Several classes are creating, decorating and constructing, "Pinwheels for Peace" in preparation for planting outside of the school on International Peace Day the following Monday. Other classes are using various media to share images of Calgary, Alberta, and Canada as illustrative of the larger Peaceful Communities that we belong to. These will be shown as part of our Artwalk display as well as in other hallways of our school.

The staff and students of Exshaw School are planning to hold an Artists Sharing event which will showcase the many artistic talents of our students. In celebrating Alberta''s Arts days, Elnora School plans a whole school event in conjunction with their Circle of Courage Philosophy. For Alberta Arts Days the Grade 8/9 students at HCHS have been given the opportunity to sign up for an arts workshop. These workshops will take the place of their last two blocks on Friday. There are a variety of Arts being represented from food art to guitar, dance/drama to photography. These are being offered by teachers, community members and Senior High students. In addition to this, some of the Senior High teachers are bringing the arts into their classroom. One example is a senior high creative writing activity. During the day the students will be working on a school mural that will be presented at an assembly at the end of the day.

Event: Amazing Alberta Arts Challenge
The week of September 14th to 18th, students will participate in integrated art and language arts activities in their classrooms, focusing on the work of Georgia O''Keeffe, the artist we will be studying this year. In their art classes with Mrs. Handford, students will develop observational skills by sketching and painting sunflowers from nature. This introduces the new artist, Georgia O''Keefe and her flower paintings. Students will have the opportunity to tour a travelling art exhibit featuring mandalas which will be at our school that week. On Friday, September 18th, an outdoor gallery will be displayed along the perimeter fence of our school yard. Our students and the general public will have the opportunity to enjoy ten large acrylic canvases created by present and former John Wilson Students. These canvases focus on art appreciation and expression and are the result of an in depth study by students for various artists through history. Our students will also take part in music listening and appreciation activities in their classrooms that week. Students will be exposed to a variety of styles of music. They will discuss the types of voices and instruments they hear, the composer of the piece or the group or artist performing and the country of origin. They will also explore the tempo and dynamics of each selection and the feelings evoked by the music. Students will complete a listening log after listening to each piece and will create an illustration of their feelings or the story suggested by the piece. The following week, the Tudor Recorder Trio from Red Deer will come to perform for our grade four students. After a mini concert featuring Renaissance music, each grade four class will take part in workshop given by the members of this group and music teacher, Ms Moorhouse. During the week of September 14th to 18th, students and staff of the school will bring photographs of themselves and their families participating in the arts at home. These photographs will be displayed on a bulletin board in our front entrance. A caption will be displayed with each photograph, explaining who is in the picture and the arts activity they are involved in. This display will showcase the talent and creativity of students and their families.

Event: Willow Park 3rd Annual Festival of Speculative Art
Gr. 9 3rd Annual Festival of Speculative Art Grade Nine Students at Arts Centered Learning at Willow Park will create an Artistic Piece that is inspired by scientific or mathematical concepts. In the past they have communicated the Particle Model of Matter through dance, done a painting of how light refracts and reflects, or writen a monologue about what it means to be the number zero. Possible mediums to work in include dance, drama, painting, sculpture, poetry, creative writing and fashion. Their work must be supported by a written Artists Statement. In this writing they will explain their chosen scientific or mathematical concepts and how they inspired their creation. They must use accurate sophisticated vocabulary and definitions. This statement will be posted beside their piece or performance area to support their creation. On Friday, September 18th they will present their work to the rest of the school in Willow Parks 3rd Annual Festival of Speculative Art.

Students K-Gr 6 are creating a large cooperative art piece filled with textures, patterns, and the colors of the rainbow. In the weeks leading up to Arts Days, students will work on creating "wavy" and "zig zag" images and then titling their drawings. On Sept. 18th each student's drawing will be displayed together to create one large art piece. Parents, friends, families, and students will then be invited to comment on the piece in the school's Art Days scrapbook in hopes of developing the discussion and appreciation of art.

We decided to make a week long event out of this! HOJA is starting us off on Monday and we have karaoke at lunch. Tuesday we have a 15 foot painting being created. Wednesday is Dress as your Fav Artist or Musician. Thursday is freestyle guitar at lunch and a dance that evening. Friday is our Opening Gathering to celebrate ARTS EDUCATION! Our music program will be performing 4 songs, our drama department will conduct a flock dance with 550 participants and our drum facilitator will orchestrate a 550 drumming session with drums and boomwhackers! Hanging on the back wall of the gym will be the banner that 15 Art 30 students created on Tuesday!

Every student in our K-4 school will create an artist trading card. Students will create their cards using colour or value. The finished cards will be used to spell out Art Grows Smarts on a bulletin board in the school. When the display is taken down students will get their first traded card as they receive a card from a student in another grade. We will continue trading cards with other FFCA campuses throughout the school year.
