Students use videoconference to link natural science and art lessons

Province invests in technology to enhance student learning and skills for the 21 st Century

Edmonton ...Grade 5 students at Rideau Park School in Edmonton and Irvine School in Irvine used the latest videoconferencing technology to take a science-focussed art lesson from celebrated Canadian wildlife artist Robert Bateman in Victoria , British Columbia .

Education Minister Ron Liepert also participated in the class which officially wrapped up Education Week 2007. The lesson, “Getting to Know Your Wild Neighbours,” was presented by Robert Bateman, based on his youth initiative Get to Know which encourages students to connect directly with other living species in our natural environment and to foster this understanding through drawing.

“Videoconferencing is about access and connectivity,” said Liepert. “Studies have shown when technology is integrated into the classroom, it increases student motivation and engagement. This session with Robert Bateman clearly demonstrates how technology can assist teachers in stimulating learning for students in subjects like natural science and fine art.”

Alberta is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader for integrating new technology into the educational system. Over the past three fiscal years, the province has invested about $12 million in videoconferencing supports and research. This figure includes the $6 million announced in Budget 2007 for new technology initiatives. The Government of Alberta has been instrumental in the development of the Alberta SuperNet, which significantly supports the use of technology in schools.
