Excellence in Teaching Awards celebrates outstanding teachers
Edmonton... Twenty-three outstanding teachers will have their contributions to Alberta's students celebrated at a special awards ceremony in Edmonton on May 12.
"Alberta has some of the best teachers in the world, and the Excellence in Teaching Awards Program provides us with a wonderful way to publicly recognize the excellent work being done by these teachers," said Alberta Education Minister Ron Liepert.
This year's Excellence in Teaching Awards Program finalists were chosen from 320 eligible nominees by a selection committee of representatives from Alberta's education community. The selection committee had the difficult task of reviewing the nomination packages which included countless examples of the outstanding teaching currently taking place in classrooms across the province.
At the awards ceremony, 20 teachers will receive a Provincial Excellence in Teaching Award and three teachers will receive a SMARTer Kids Foundation Innovative Use of Technology Award.
Since the inception of the awards program in 1989, almost 8,000 teachers have been nominated and 400 have been award recipients.
"The 19th annual Excellence in Teaching Awards is presented by Alberta Education with the support of the Alberta Home and School Councils' Association, the Alberta School Boards Association, The Alberta Teachers' Association, the Edmonton Journal, the SMARTer Kids Foundation and XEROX.
Collaborating with our education stakeholders to provide a high quality learning environment is part of Premier Ed Stelmach's plan to improve Albertans' quality of life. Other priorities are to govern with integrity and transparency, manage growth pressures, build a stronger Alberta, and provide safe and secure communities.
