Millet school receives funding
Investment in school infrastructure tops $610 million for 2007/08
Millet… Wetaskiwin Regional Public Schools is receiving funding to replace Griffiths-Scott Middle School in Millet. The investment comes from $65-million in unanticipated second-quarter surplus funding that will support eight school projects across Alberta.
“The Alberta government is committed to the health and safety of students,” said Minister of Education Ron Liepert. “This investment supports one of the Wetaskiwin school board’s highest capital infrastructure priorities and will significantly enhance the learning environment for students.”
Griffiths-Scott, a grades 5-9 program, is receiving funding to replace the school and improve program options. The next step is for Alberta Education staff to meet immediately with the local school board to finalize the scope of the project and determine the allocation of appropriate funding.
“What’s pleasing for the community is the fact that students are the focus of this funding,” said Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA LeRoy Johnson. “Investing in school infrastructure is an investment in students.”
Last August, the government announced $197 million to support 26 major modernization projects throughout the province. With the additional $65 million, the government’s investment in new school infrastructure, as well as modernization and maintenance, totals more than $610 million for the 2007/08 fiscal year. The government’s 2007/10 Capital Plan includes:
- 91 school projects in planning, design or construction stage
- 13 new schools opening 2007/08
- 45 modular classrooms
- 18 P3 schools (Edmonton - 9, Calgary - 9)
