Hancock showcases Alberta’s education system in Singapore

Edmonton... Alberta’s Education Minister Dave Hancock has accepted an invitation to an international roundtable in Singapore on July 6 and 7, joining a select group of education leaders to showcase and share best practices.

Hancock, the only Canadian education minister to receive an invitation to the session, will be joined by counterparts from Australia, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.

“Alberta is recognized internationally as having a high-performing education system that possesses innovative education policies and practices,” said Hancock.  “The strategic discussions and directions at the education roundtable will be extremely valuable to our educators in Alberta and help us to grow the success of our students, the quality of our teachers and our education system as a whole.”

The roundtable is hosted by Singapore’s Minister of Education Dr. Ng Eng Hen, and Sir Michael Barber, partner at McKinsey and Company and co-author of the ground-breaking report “How the world’s best performing school systems came out on top.”

The roundtable also coincides with the 9th World Convention of the International Confederation of Principals, which brings together 1,600 leaders in education from over 30 countries to exchange views on the latest trends and developments in educational leadership.  The Minister will also participate in this convention.

While in Singapore, Hancock will tour a number of schools, colleges and universities and hold meetings with education officials from Singapore, Sweden, China and Australia.

International insights gained from the meetings and activities in Singapore will enhance Inspiring Education: A Dialogue with Albertans, the broad-based discussion with citizens underway on the fundamental importance of education to Alberta’s future.

The estimated cost of the trip, including travel and accommodation for Minister Hancock and a member of his staff is $18,500.  The Singapore government will cover $5,000 in additional in-country expenses for the minister and his assistant.
