Twenty-three teachers receive 2009 Excellence in Teaching Awards
Edmonton...Twenty-three remarkable teachers from across the province have been selected to receive 2009 Excellence in Teaching Awards. The awards recognize teachers and principals for their creative and inspiring work with Kindergarten to Grade 12 students.
“Student success is a direct result of the tremendous work done by Alberta’s teachers,” said Education Minister Dave Hancock. “These 23 recipients represent thousands of truly excellent teachers serving Alberta’s students, and the Excellence in Teaching Awards Program recognizes the impressive commitment of our teachers and thanks them for their contribution to the province’s high-quality education system.”
Twenty award recipients can access up to $4,000 for professional development. The three teachers who receive SMARTer Kids Foundation Innovative Use of Technology Awards will receive a comprehensive technology package, which includes a SMART board. All award recipients will be formally honoured at a dinner and awards ceremony with the Education Minister in Edmonton on May 30.
“I commend the 23 award recipients for creating stimulating learning environments that encourage students to embrace learning and motivates them to exceed their own expectations,” said Hancock. “These teachers have undoubtedly made a positive impact on students and others in their school communities that will have a lasting impression for years to come.”
Award recipients were chosen from 365 eligible nominees by a selection committee of representatives from Alberta’s education community. Each nomination package included letters of support from a teaching colleague, principal or superintendent, and a member of the public, and spoke of each nominee’s passion for teaching and creativity in the classroom.
Alberta Education hosts the 21st Annual Excellence in Teaching Awards with the support of the Alberta School Councils’ Association, the Alberta School Boards Association, the Alberta Teachers’ Association, the Council on Alberta Teaching Standards, the Edmonton Journal and the SMARTer Kids Foundation. Albertans have celebrated Excellence in Teaching since 1989, with more than 8,000 teachers nominated and more than 400 award recipients.
