Students’ learning enriched through global education

Alberta celebrates International Education Week November 12-16

Edmonton... Alberta students are taking social studies classes with students from Mexico, the United States and Pakistan –thanks to a new interactive course being piloted in Edmonton.

The Four Nations Classroom was created by Queen Elizabeth School in Edmonton, in partnership with Alberta Education.  This new learning approach brings students and teachers together from four different countries through the use of interactive technologies: videoconferencing, web-streamed, face-to-face dialogue and web chatting.

The teachers deliver the lesson plans cooperatively and students complete written assignments to learn about each others’ history, culture, language, economics, and other topics of interest.

Alberta has a range of programs like the Four Nations Classroom, exchanges and study programs that allow students and teachers to interact on the world level.  International education provides students with opportunities to cultivate international friendships, develop inter cultural skills – language and understanding, in addition to greater awareness of the political, social and economic systems around the world.

The Alberta government and Alberta’s schools are joining other provinces and countries around the world to celebrate International Education Week from November 12-16. The annual week-long event is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international students studying in the province, Alberta students studying abroad, teachers on exchange, and educators who provide a curriculum with an international focus.

In celebration of International Education Week, Alberta Education also invited young Albertans to enter the Think Global Art Contest on the theme of global citizenship.  Some of the student artwork will be on display at the Alberta Legislature throughout the week.
