Student artists honoured at the Alberta Legislature

International Education Week wraps up for another year with a splash of colour

Edmonton...Three Alberta students were recognized as the winners of the Think Global Student Art Contest at a special ceremony at the Alberta Legislature.  Alberta Education invited young Albertans to enter the contest in celebration of International Education Week 2007.

The theme of the Think Global Student Art Contest was “Global Citizenship: One World.”  The contest was open to children and youth across Alberta in Grades 3-12.  This was the first year the contest was held with more than 250 submissions from across the province.

The winners were selected in the following categories:

  • Grade 3-6:       Nicole Schmidt, age eight, Marion Carson Elementary School, Calgary
  • Grade 7-9:       Elijah Dueck, age 12, G.S. Lakie Middle School, Lethbridge
  • Grade 10-12:   Sarah Bergeron, 17 years old, Medicine Hat High School. Medicine Hat

Selection criteria was based on an awareness of global dynamics and effectively communicating this awareness through their art.

The Think Global Student Art Contest encouraged young people to explore the many facets of living in a global society and helps profile the province’s International Education Strategy, which ensures young Albertans are well-prepared to take their place in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.

A number of government supported activities contribute to the internationalization of Alberta’s education system, including student and teacher exchanges, international student programs, school partnerships, visiting teacher and foreign language consultants programs and agreements and liaison with foreign governments.
