Province helps prepare teachers to deliver language courses
Awards build capacity for delivery of language learning
Edmonton... Twenty-five current and future teachers will be awarded a total of $87,500 in scholarships and bursaries to enhance their language learning skills to benefit Alberta’s Kindergarten to Grade 12 students.
The funding will support 11 teachers who will spend this summer immersed in second-language and culture courses, as well as enhancing language teaching skills in languages such as Cree, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese and Ukrainian. Their knowledge will be applied to students when classes resume this fall. In addition, 14 students currently enrolled in an Alberta post-secondary teacher preparation program were awarded scholarships last spring, encouraging future second-language teachers in Alberta’s classrooms.
Post-secondary students eligible for a Languages in Teacher Education Scholarship must be Alberta residents registered full time in a recognized Alberta teacher preparation program in the province. Recipients are nominated by their post-secondary institution based on academic achievement and education program components taken to prepare to be a language teacher in Alberta after graduation.
To be eligible for a Language Teacher Bursary, applicants must hold a valid Alberta professional teaching certificate and must have been teaching in the province for at least three years. In addition, applicants must either have a specialization in languages or show evidence of having begun to study the language they will teach.
The Language Teacher Bursary and Languages in Teacher Education Scholarship are examples of the more than 50 Alberta scholarship programs available to Albertans. More information about these and other scholarships is available at www.alis.gov.ab.ca/scholarships.
