Albertans encouraged to recognize exceptional teachers
Nominations sought for 2009 Excellence in Teaching Awards
Edmonton... Albertans are encouraged to recognize outstanding teachers and principals for their inspiring work in schools across the province. Nominations for the 2009 Excellence in Teaching Awards are now being accepted.
“Students, parents, teacher-colleagues and community members have a wonderful opportunity with these awards to thank teachers for a job well done,” said Education Minister Dave Hancock. “We have tremendous teachers in our province, and I encourage Albertans to show appreciation for their creative and innovative work everyday in nurturing and enlightening our students.”
A nomination package, including details of eligibility and selection criteria, is available at www.education.alberta.ca by clicking on the “Teachers” tab and then on “Excellence in Teaching Awards.” Nominations can be submitted to Alberta Education until February 5, 2009. This year, 130 semi-finalists will be selected. Twenty of those semi-finalists will receive Provincial Excellence in Teaching Awards, and three will receive SMARTer Kids Foundation Innovative Use of Technology Awards.
Award recipients will be formally honoured at a dinner and ceremony with the Minister of Education on May 30 in Edmonton.
Alberta Education hosts the 21st annual Excellence in Teaching Awards with the support of the Alberta School Councils’ Association, the Alberta School Boards’ Association, The Alberta Teachers’ Association, the Council on Alberta Teaching Standards, the Edmonton Journal, and the SMARTer Kids Foundation.
The Excellence in Teaching Awards have been celebrated since 1989, with more than 8,200 teachers nominated and 423 who have received awards. Last year, 334 teachers were nominated and 23 received awards.
