Students encouraged to ‘speak out’ about education on video
Province-wide Speak Out forums resume in February
Edmonton... Alberta students are being asked to share their education experience through a new Speak Out Video Contest. The contest theme is: What I want. What I need. My vision for education.
Full contest details are available at www.speakout.alberta.ca by clicking on the “Contest” tab. The top seven videos, selected by a panel of expert judges, will be posted on the Speak Out website where students will be able to vote for their top three videos. The winners will be formally recognized at the Speak Out - Annual Student Conference with the Minister of Education in Edmonton this May.
The contest is another way to encourage students across the province to become active participants in the Speak Out – Alberta Student Engagement Initiative that was launched by the Alberta government in November 2008.
Throughout February and March, a series of student forums will be held in cooperation with select high schools across Alberta. In the forums, which began last fall, students are asked to talk about their educational experience and identify what is or is not working for them in school. This feedback will be the starting point for discussion at the Speak Out - Annual Student Conference. A list of the forums is available on the Speak Out website.
The Speak Out - Alberta Student Engagement Initiative offers a variety of opportunities for students to help shape the face of education in the province. To further this work, the Minister of Education’s Student Advisory Council will be created in May. The Council will meet face-to-face with the Minister several times a year to discuss student concerns and ideas.
