Albertans urged to take a stand against bullying

November 15 to 21 is National Bullying Awareness Week

Edmonton... Bullying is not a normal part of growing up. It has very serious consequences, often preventing children and youth from reaching their full potential. This year National Bullying Awareness Week runs from November 15 to 21 and Albertans are encouraged to share the responsibility of helping to prevent bullying, and to change behaviour that may cause hurt to others.

The Government of Alberta is committed to working with families, schools and communities to raise awareness and find solutions to stop bullying behaviour. Through Alberta’s Bullying Prevention Strategy, government has established a provincial Bullying Helpline, developed interactive resources in communities and schools and provided funding to support the development of community-based prevention programs.

Research has shown a range of programs, resources and approaches are helpful in preventing and stopping bullying in schools and communities. Many school jurisdictions have allocated resources for bullying prevention initiatives, and all develop their own action plans to deal with the serious issue of bullying.

Albertans who would like more information and advice about how to address bullying are encouraged to call the toll-free, 24-hour Bullying Helpline (1 888-456-2323) or visit www.bullyfreealberta.ca. The website features prevention strategies, fact sheets, information about cyberbullying and Internet safety, and links to other interactive websites that teach children and youth about bullying and how to stop it. The Media Awareness Network allows school jurisdictions in the province to access teacher training resources at no cost that address cyberbullying and how to teach children and youth to be safe on-line.

Events are being held in communities across the province to promote bullying prevention, including presentations for child care providers and educators, and bullying awareness discussions at community events. To find an event in your area, visit www.bullyfreealberta.ca.
