Schools recognize Veterans’ Week November 5 - 11

Online resources available for teachers and students

Edmonton... From November 5 -11, schools across Alberta will be honouring Veterans' Week and Remembrance Day with school assemblies, poetry competitions, plays, art displays and guest speakers.

Alberta Education has posted a number of resources on its website to help encourage school-based activities to honour the ordinary men and women who did extraordinary things to protect our freedom and build a safer world in which to live. The list of resources can be found at www.education.alberta.ca.

Learning about our national history, including Canada’s role during times of war, military conflict and peace, is an important and valued part of the revised Alberta social studies curriculum.  First introduced in 2005, the new K-12 curriculum has been phased into Alberta's classrooms and is now being taught at every grade level across the province. The revised program includes an increased focus on teaching and learning history and emphasizes our country’s origins, Canada’s role in significant world events, and the ways in which Canada’s cultural mosaic has shaped our society.

More information about the revised social studies program of study, including factsheets highlighting the curriculum connections to Canadian history, can be found at www.education.alberta.ca by clicking on ‘Teachers’ and then ‘Social Studies’ under the heading ‘Programs of Study’.
