JAWS receives $1 million in funding for CTS lab

Edmonton … The Government of Alberta has committed $1 million to fund the modernization of a new Career and Technology Studies (CTS) lab at J.A. Williams High School (JAWS) in Lac La Biche.

The modernization project will allow the Northern Lights School Division (NLSD) to offer courses in the areas of the trades, construction technology, career transitions, fashion studies and foods in a multiple activity lab at the grade 9-12 school.

"There has recently been an increasing demand by students for CTS programming at J.A. Williams High School so this funding is timely and addresses a definite need," said Minister of Education Ron Liepert. "With a demand for skilled tradespeople in Alberta, the CTS component at JAWS will benefit students and the province."

The JAWS school site is large enough to accommodate the addition of an approximately 400-square metre CTS facility. For the past number of years, NLSD has been in a partnership with Portage College to facilitate the delivery of CTS programs to students who attend JAWS.

"Today students need modern equipment in order to prepare for life after Grade 12. I am pleased the need has been recognized and after many years of successful collaboration with Portage College, J.A. Williams High School can now develop its own state of the art facilities," said Ray Danyluk, MLA for Lac La Biche - St. Paul.

Providing quality learning opportunities is one key initiative under Premier Ed Stelmach's plan to build a stronger Alberta. Other priorities for the government are to: govern with integrity and transparency, manage growth pressures, improve Albertans' quality of life and provide safe and secure communities.
