Provincial conversation focuses on the future of education
Speaker lineup announced for Inspiring Education fall forum
Edmonton... Albertans will continue to have an opportunity to shape the future of education in Alberta through Inspiring Education: A Dialogue with Albertans fall forum October 18 to 20 in Edmonton. Registrations for the event, which is a continuation of the spring public engagement initiative led by Alberta Education, are now open.
“The fall forum will bring together the creative and provocative thinking from our regional, online and personal conversations and help to form a new vision for education,” said Minister of Education Dave Hancock. “The forum will engage the diverse voices of Albertans as well as informative speakers expressing their perspectives on how education can help our students of tomorrow find their passions and prepare for success in the future.”
Keynote speakers at the Inspiring Education fall forum include:
- Dr. Jennifer James, a cultural anthropologist specializing in the human face of technological change and the development of cultural intelligence.
- Dr. Mark Milliron, who explores leadership development, future trends, learning strategies, and the human side of technology change.
- Daniel H. Pink, the author of a trio of provocative, bestselling books on the changing world of work, including A Whole New Mind: Why Right Brainers Will Rule the Future.
- Dr. Indira Samarasekera, President of the University of Alberta, one of Canada’s most respected research-intensive universities.

Community Conversations Summary
Over the last several months, through Inspiring Education approximately 1,000 Albertans have gathered across the province to talk about their past learning experiences and their hopes, dreams and aspirations for the future. In addition to the 10 government-hosted sessions, there were many community conversations and online discussions. Participants at these events shared their hopes, dreams and aspirations for the future of education and their thoughts on what an educated Albertan would look like 20 years from now.
Inspiring Education: A Dialogue with Albertans is led by a Steering Committee representing a range of perspectives, co-chaired by Athabasca-Redwater MLA Jeff Johnson and Edmonton teacher Brent McDonough. Membership is comprised of three additional MLAs and 17 other individuals from across the province. The project is also supported by a working committee, with membership from education stakeholder groups and representatives from several provincial government departments.
One of the outcomes from the fall forum will inform the policy work of the project’s Steering Committee and potential changes to the School Act.
