Nominees vie for Excellence in Teaching Awards

Edmonton... A class act of 408 innovative and effective Alberta teachers have been nominated for the 2003 Excellence in Teaching Awards. The Awards celebrate a teacher's ability to inspire students to set high standards for themselves.

"Each nominee is a reflection of the high quality teaching that students benefit from in classrooms, each day, all across the province," said Dr. Lyle Oberg, Minister of Learning. "Exceptional teachers make a lasting contribution to the lives of students. Through enthusiasm, commitment and creativity, these teachers motivate students to build dreams, embrace new challenges and exceed their own expectations."

All nominees will receive a certificate of recognition, and in April 2003, 128 finalists will be named. Of these finalists, 20 will be honoured in May as recipients of a provincial Excellence in Teaching Award. In addition, one teacher will receive the SMARTer Kids Foundation Innovative Use of Technology Award. All provincial award recipients will be honoured at a dinner and award ceremony in Edmonton on May 10.

Alberta Learning presents the 15th Annual Excellence in Teaching Awards with the support of The Document Company, XEROX, the Alberta School Boards Association, The Edmonton Journal, SMARTer Kids Foundation, and the Alberta Chambers of Commerce.
