Excellence in Teaching Awards Recognize Outstanding Professionals
Edmonton... Twenty of the most innovative and effective teaching professionals in Alberta will receive a 2004 Excellence in Teaching Award at a Gala event in Calgary. Three teachers will receive the SMARTer Kids Foundation Innovative Use of Technology Award.
The gala event, including a dinner and awards ceremony, will be held in Calgary on May 1, 2004, to celebrate the accomplishments of these 23 outstanding teachers.
"Teachers do more than teach, they also impart a love of learning and inspire students to reach new heights of success," said Minister of Learning Dr. Lyle Oberg. "The Excellence in Teaching Awards gives Albertans the chance to honour these teachers, who are outstanding examples of the exceptional teaching we see across the province, in every community, every day."
A selection committee, made up of parents, school board administrators, university representatives and teachers from across the learning community, chose the provincial recipients. The selection committee looked for specific examples of innovation and creativity in a variety of areas, including motivating students, establishing a stimulating learning environment and fostering the development of students' intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth.
All recipients will receive commemorative pins and award certificates for their achievements. In recognition of the school's role in fostering teaching excellence, the recipient's school will also receive certificates of recognition.
The 16th annual Excellence in Teaching Awards are presented by Alberta Learning with the support of The Document Company, XEROX, the SMARTer Kids Foundation, the Alberta School Boards Association, The Edmonton Journal, and the Alberta Chambers of Commerce.
