Instructional time
Research and experience have shown that immersion students’ proficiency in the French language is highly proportional to the time devoted to instruction in French. A number of local factors can influence the time allotted to instruction in French. However, the following percentages of time allocations are consistent with the objectives of alternative French language programs, including those of French immersion:

| Grades 1 – 2 | 90% to 100% |
| Grades 3 – 6 | 70% to 80% |
| Grades 7 – 9 | 50% to 80% |
| Grades 10 – 12 | 40% to 80% |
