Vulcan High School Linking to International Space Station
Students from Palliser Regional Schools will have a chance to speak directly to astronauts aboard the International Space Station during Canada's first Expedition Mission in 2009. Canadian Space Agency astronaut Dr. Robert Thirsk, the first Canadian to spend six months in space, will answer science and technology-related questions from participating students in real time. The event will be hosted from County Central High School in Vulcan.
This event builds on Alberta Education’s Memorandum of Understanding with the Canadian Space Agency that provides a framework for science and technology activities for Kindergarten to Grade 12 students and for pre-service teachers. The Canadian Space Agency’s educational programming also supports the government’s priority of increasing student participation and completion rates in math, science and technology.

International Project on 21st Century Assessment
The challenge of developing new approaches for assessing educational achievement is a common concern in education communities around the world. Three leading technology companies, Cisco, Intel and Microsoft, are collaborating on a multi-sector research project to transform global educational assessment and improve learning outcomes. At the Learning and Technology World Forum in London in January 2009, they announced the project which will develop new assessment approaches, methods and technologies for measuring the success of 21st century teaching and learning in classrooms around the world.
The project team will focus on several key areas that will offer the most promising opportunities for transforming education and assessment, including:
- Education assessment methodologies and technologies;
- Effective learning environments and replicable ICT-enabled teaching; and
- Assessment methods that foster the development and assessment of the skills students will need to succeed.
The project will review successful classroom practices for the teaching and testing of 21st century skills and draw implications for large-scale assessments.
