Quality Teaching

Standards

Quality teaching is built on a solid foundation of knowledge, skills and attributes that teachers demonstrate throughout their careers.

In 1997, the then Minister of Education signed the Ministerial Order Teaching Quality Standard Applicable to the Provision of Basic Education in Alberta, commonly called the Teaching Quality Standard.

The Teaching Quality Standard establishes the one standard that all teachers are expected to meet in their practice throughout their careers. The knowledge, skills and attributes identified in the Teaching Quality Standard guide:

  • teacher preparation institutions in the development and delivery of programs that will provide their students a foundation of knowledge theory and experiences
  • beginning teachers as they reflect on their practice, and plan their professional development in collaboration with their supervisors and evaluators
  • experienced teachers in their professional development, supervision, evaluation and remediation strategies in order that they continue to meet the Teaching Quality Standard consistently throughout their careers.

Requirements
All teachers in Alberta whether in a public, separate or accredited private school must hold a valid Alberta teaching certificate. Local school boards hire teachers and negotiate their contracts.
