Second Languages
4. What schools offer second languages?
Instruction is currently provided in about 16 languages, other than French, in 47 school boards. Programs vary from district to district and school to school, depending on local interest.
French is the most common language and has both immersion and second language options. In addition to French, provincially developed language programs are offered in: Blackfoot, Cree, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Spanish and Ukrainian.
Many school boards have developed their own programs. Local language programs include: Arabic, Chinese, Chipewyan, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese and Swedish. These locally developed courses are based on local needs and demands, and may vary from year to year.
For more information on second language instruction offered in your area, please contact your local school board.
