How to Apply
On-line web applications are to be used by first-time applicants who have never previously held an Alberta teaching certificate. If you held a teaching certificate in Alberta previously, please proceed to the Extension/Re-issuance section. If you are unsure about your previous teaching authority in Alberta, please contact Teacher Development and Certification Branch prior to completing an application.
Applications
Follow the application instructions and choose the application form that is applicable to where you completed your initial teacher preparation program.
- Alberta Graduates - for individuals who have completed a teacher preparation program within Alberta.
- North American - for individuals who have completed a teacher preparation program outside of Alberta but within Canada or the United States.
- Out-of-Country - for individuals who have completed a teacher preparation program outside of Canada or the United States.
Application Fees
Application fees are determined by the location of the institution providing the applicant's teacher preparation program:
| Prepared within Alberta (Alberta Graduates) | $200.00 |
| Prepared within Canada or the U.S.A. (Out of Province) | $225.00 |
| Prepared outside Canada or the U.S.A. (Out of Country) | $250.00 |
Note: Application fees are non-refundable.
Notification and Processing
You will receive an email confirming a successful submission if you apply on-line. Do not attempt to submit additional applications.
It takes a minimum of 10 business days from the date that your signed application is received in our Office to complete an initial review and determine if any further documents are required. Shortly thereafter, you will be contacted by mail to acknowledge any documents that have been received and inform you of any further documents that must be submitted.
Applications are evaluated in date order that an application is considered complete with all required documents and information necessary to conduct an assessment of academic and professional qualifications. A letter will be sent to you confirming that your file is deemed complete.
Please allow a minimum of 16 weeks for the evaluation of credentials for applicants who completed their initial teacher preparation outside of Canada and the United States, and a minimum of 12 weeks for applicants who completed their initial teacher preparation within Canada and the United States before contacting our office regarding the results of your evaluation.
Please keep in mind that the staff that responds to email and telephone inquiries are the same individuals that process and evaluate applications. Please wait until the recommended time has passed before contacting us. Your assistance will help us provide the optimum service possible.
