North American Applicants
This application is for teachers who completed their teacher preparation program outside of Alberta or within the United States.
Documents you must submit directly to this office:
- completed application form, printed and signed at the three (3) designated locations,
- photocopy of Canadian birth certificate (government issued) or official evidence of your immigration status in Canada,
- photocopy of all valid teaching certificates issued from another Canadian provinces,
- evidence of all names used for legal purposes,
- evidence of language proficiency,
- $225.00 application fee payable to the Minister of Finance (payable on-line or enclosed with your application).
All information entered on the application form becomes part of your permanent record with Alberta Education.
Documents that institutions will need to submit for you:
You are required to contact institutions to request the following documents be sent to this office.
- official transcript(s) from ALL post-secondary institutions attended,
- official Statement(s) of Professional Standing
Note: All documents in a language other than English or French must be accompanied by an English or French translation along with the statutory declaration form. Statutory declarations are not required if your translation was completed by an official translator.
Incomplete applications and documents not deemed irreplaceable that are submitted in support of an application will be retained on file for one year from receipt of the last document(s). Thereafter, they will be destroyed in accordance with Alberta Education Records and Management Policies.
Secondary School Leaving Certificate
Applicants who completed their secondary schooling within Canada and the United States may be required to provide original high school university entrance and/or secondary school matriculation records.
Applicants who attended a secondary school program outside Canada and the United States must present their original secondary school (high school) leaving certificate(s) and a record of courses completed and grades received.
Transcripts
Transcripts generally refer to a detailed record of courses completed and grades received.
Applicants are required to contact every institution attended requesting official transcripts be sent directly from the institution to the Registrar of Alberta Education. Student copies, photocopies and facsimiles are not accepted.
Applicants may also be required to submit original, irreplaceable documents from post-secondary institutions outside Canada and the United States.
Please note that individuals may be asked to provide a course syllabus of programs of study, practicum reports detailing the hours/days/weeks of supervised student teaching, and any other additional information to substantiate an application.
Note: A comprehensive transcript from one institution including study completed at another institution is not acceptable.
Getting Ready
Have the following information available to complete the web application form:
- List of all Secondary schools attended,
- List of all post secondary institutions attended,
- Type and date of credentials(s) earned,
- MasterCard or Visa if paying fee on line.
Once all sections of the application are completed in full, press the SUBMIT button at the bottom of the application form. For security purposes, once you have pressed "Submit" you will not be able to return to the application form. Do not attempt to print application from this screen.
Once the submission is complete you will be directed to the PRINT and PAYMENT screen. Please follow these steps in order:

Step 1 – Printout the application form by pressing the PRINT button. You should print two copies, one for your records and one to be signed and mailed in to Teacher Development and Certification.

Step 2 – You now have the option to pay the application fees by Visa or MasterCard* by selecting the PAY BY CREDIT CARD button. You will be directed to a secure web page to complete your payment transaction.
Mail the completed application form along with a photocopy of your birth certificate to Teacher Development and Certification.
Applications will not be processed if the signed application form, fee and required documentation have not been submitted.
