Teacher Certification

Currency of Teaching Experience

Alberta Education has instituted a new requirement to ensure that new applicants for Alberta certification meet currency qualifications prior to entering the classroom.

An applicant for interim certification must provide evidence of acceptable teaching experience, or equivalent that includes:  responsibility for the planning, delivery and evaluation of an instructional program in which the curriculum reflects the educational system of Alberta

Applicants must have completed teaching experience within the past ten years which includes a minimum of either:

  • 75 days of teaching experience in one academic year, or
  • 100 days of teaching experience over two consecutive academic years

A written verification from employers of teaching experience completed within the last ten years from the school authority or provincial/state Department of Education is required.  The written verification must contain specific details regarding one's employment as a teacher; the duration of employment (the number of days) and grade levels taught.  The information must be written on official school authority letterhead, be dated and signed by the appropriate authority

If no paid teaching experience has been completed, a minimum of ten weeks of supervised student teaching within the initial teacher preparation program must have been completed within the last ten years to be considered current.

Individuals who do not meet the minimum experience requirement will be asked to complete upgrading which may include coursework and/or a practicum.
