Professional Standards
Teaching Quality Standard
All applicants for professional certification must declare that they are able and committed to applying the appropriate knowledge, skills, and attributes toward student learning as described by the Teaching Quality Standard Ministerial Order (016/97). They also must commit to teaching practice and professional growth in keeping with the Standard and the Teacher Growth, Supervision and Evaluation Policy.
Council on Alberta Teaching Standards (COATS)
The Council on Alberta Teaching Standards (COATS) was established in 1985 by Ministerial Order. Its mandate has since been reaffirmed, and COATS continues to provide advice and recommendations to the Minister on matters related to teaching, including:
- teacher certification
- teacher preparation, induction and professional growth
- practice review
- Excellence in Teaching
- other matters of interest to the Minister
