Education Facts

Alberta high school students participating in the 2006 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) scored second highest in the world for science;

Alberta Grade 4 students achieved top three in the world in the latest international literacy tests;

Alberta’s education system is working to make schools and curricula more internationally oriented: to prepare students with the knowledge and skills needed for an increasingly complex world;

Alberta has one of the most educated populations in the country. In fact, by age 24, 75% of Alberta high school graduates have a post-secondary credential or are working towards one;

About 90% of Albertans aged 25-34 have completed high school;

Alberta has more than 590,000 Kindergarten through Grade 12 students, an increase of approximately 4.3 per cent over the last decade, mostly in high growth areas;

In the 2007 Education Satisfaction Survey, 99% of students were satisfied with the quality of education, followed by teachers (94%), board members (93%), parents (K-12: 91%, severe special needs: 84%) and public (74%).

Over the last five years, student enrolment in French as a Second Language, French immersion, and Francophone education in Alberta has increased 19%.

Alberta Education has about 50 formal school partnerships with schools in China, France, Mexico, Norway and Ukraine.
