Residential Schools
The Indian residential school system predates Confederation. The Canadian federal government began to play a role in the development and administration of the Indian Residential School System as early as 1874. Most residential schools ceased to operate by the mid-1970s; the last federally-run residential school in Canada closed in 1996.
It is estimated there are 80,000 people alive today who attended residential schools.
In 2006 the Government of Canada announced the approval by all parties of an Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement to compensate the 9,938 former students who attended an Indian Residential School totaling $79.5 million.
