First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education Policy Framework

First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education Policy Framework is a realignment of the department's 1987 Policy Statement on Native Education in Alberta. While successes were achieved through the 1987 policy, Alberta Learning seeks to ensure that all policy directions remain relevant to the educational needs of today's Aboriginal learners.

The Policy Framework is the culmination of a review process initiated in 1999. During the review, the ministry received valuable input about the education goals of Aboriginal learners and parents in the province. This input was the foundation for the development of the Policy Framework.

It is designed to be a living document, expected to change over time as the vision, policy, goals, principles, performance measures and outcomes are implemented and evaluated. It is anticipated that the Policy Framework will help stakeholders identify their role in helping First Nations, Métis and Inuit learners achieve their educational goals and will help guide planning and evaluation of Aboriginal learner programming.
