Admission Requirements
Senior High School English Language Arts Program and Admission Requirements for Post-Secondary Studies in Alberta — Revised November 2003
NOTE: Before choosing senior high school English Language Arts (ELA) courses, students are encouraged to consider admission requirements for various programs at post-secondary institutions. Below are links to the Websites of each Alberta post-secondary institution and, for most institutions, to a chart showing ELA courses required for admission to individual institution's programs. Students are also encouraged to contact the Admissions department of each institution for additional information.
Colleges and University-Colleges
Alberta College of Art and Design
ACAD will accept ELA 30-1 with a grade of 60% and ELA 30-2 with a grade of 65% for admission purposes.Augustana University College
Augustana University College will accept only ELA 30-1 for admission purposes for each of its degree programs.

See pathways chart. Program requirements differ. For some programs, both ELA 30-1 and ELA 30-2 will be accepted but a higher grade will be required for ELA 30-2.

ELA 30-1 is required for admission to all programs offered.

Concordia will substitute ELA 10-1, 20-1 and 30-1 for English 10, 20, 30 for each of its degree programs. ELA 30-1 is required for admission purposes.

ELA 30-1 is not a required course for admission to most programs.

For admission purposes, Grande Prairie Regional College will accept ELA 30-1 to programs where English 30 is accepted, and ELA 30-2 for programs where English 33 is accepted.Grant MacEwan College
Grant MacEwan College will accept ELA 30-1 in place of English 30 and ELA 30-2 in place of English 33.Keyano College
All programs with English 30 as a prerequisite will also accept ELA 30-1 with the same admission grades. All programs with English 33 as a prerequisite will also accept ELA 30-2 with the same admission grades. All courses that accept English 10, 20, 30 as a prerequisite will accept ELA 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 as prerequisites with the same achievement level. All courses or programs that accept English 13, 23, 33 as a prerequisite will accept ELA 10-2, 20-2, 30-2 with the same achievement levels.The King's University College
The King's University College will accept only ELA 30-1 for admission purposes for each of its degree programs. ELA 30-1 is not applicable to the Bachelor of Education as this is an after-degree program. ELA 30-1 will also be used as part of our English Language Proficiency Policy, which in part permits students to demonstrate proficiency by means of a 75% on the departmental examination or 80% on the blended grade.

Lakeland College will accept ELA 30-1 in place of the former English 30, and ELA 30-2 in place of the former English 33 for admission purposes.Lethbridge Community College
ELA 30-1 is required for admission to several programs. For most other programs, ELA 30-2 is required.

ELA 30-1 is required for all university transfer programs. ELA 30-1 is required for most other programs as well. For a limited number of programs, ELA 30-1 or ELA 30-2 is preferred although ELA 20-1 or ELA 20-2 would be accepted depending on the applicant pool.

Any Mount Royal College program currently requiring English 30 will take ELA 30-1 and any program currently requiring English 33 will accept ELA 30-2.

Nazarene University College will accept ELA 30-1 for admission to all degree programs.

Most programs at Northern Lakes College require ELA 30-1 or ELA 30-2. Where either course is accepted, the grade requirement may be higher for ELA 30-2.

Eleven specific programs require ELA 30-1 for admission. Another eleven programs require ELA 30-2 for admission.

For programs where either ELA 30-1 or 30-2 may be used for admission, the grade requirements may be higher for ELA 30-2.

St. Mary's College will require ELA 30-1 for admission to its programs.

Yellowhead Tribal College will accept ELA 30–1 in place of the former English 30 and ELA 30–2 in place of the former English 33.
Institutes of Technology
Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT)
Where a NAIT program currently identifies English 30 as a prerequisite, ELA 30-1 may be substituted. Where a NAIT program currently identifies English 33 as a prerequisite, ELA 30-2 may be substituted. There will be no change in the minimum grades identified for admission based on English 30 or 33 for students presenting with ELA 30-1 and 30-2.Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT)
SAIT will accept ELA 30-1 and 30-2 as equivalent to English 30 and 33 respectively for admission purposes.
Universities
University of Alberta
University of Alberta will accept the new ELA 30-1 course for admission to all programs for which English 30 has been used in the past.

University of Calgary will accept the new ELA 30-1 course for all purposes for which English 30 has been used in the past. ELA 30-2 will not be accepted as a substitute for English 30 or for any other purpose.University of Lethbridge
Upon its implementation, ELA 30-1 should be used in the consideration of high school applicants, in the same fashion that English 30 is currently used. ELA 30-1 will serve in lieu of English 30. A passing grade in English 30 is required of all Alberta high school applicants.
