K–3 Literacy and Numeracy Consultation Initiative – 2005/2006

In the summer of 2005, Alberta Education initiated a province-wide consultation about literacy and numeracy development in the early grades.

The purpose of the consultation was to:

  • ensure that K-3 students have the essential foundation skills for later success in learning, and;
  • address the needs of students not achieving the literacy and numeracy standards by the end of Grade 3.
Alberta Education believes students must meet the standards if they are to be successful throughout their schooling.

A stakeholder advisory committee comprised of school board representatives, superintendents, principals, teachers and parents was formed to provide input and advice on the consultation, including the development of questions to be used in the consultation process.

The consultations involved groups of parents, including parents of First Nations and Métis children, meeting in five centres across the province. Stakeholder organizations were also encouraged to conduct consultations and to make submissions. The consultation was supported by a research analysis by Alberta Education staff members.

The result of these consultations served as the basis for a report and recommendations developed in conjunction with the stakeholder advisory committee.
