A Review of the Literature on Four Aspects of the Second-Language Learning

Alberta Education's Languages Initiative has undertaken a number of activities to assist school authorities plan for the successful implementation of language programming. One such activity is a review of the literature focussing on the four topic areas requested by education stakeholders.

The updated review provides information on four aspects of language learning: 

  • effects of learning a second language on the first language
  • role of content instruction in offering a second language
  • the effects of learning a second language on students with special needs
  • effects of learning a third language on students for whom English is a second language.

A Survey of the Literature on Aboriginal Language Learning and Teaching

An overview of current Indigenous language pedagogy and instructional practices on an international scale has been prepared by the Language Research Centre (LRC) of the University of Calgary. The survey has focused on three key areas related to: language and culture connection, pedagogy and instructional practices, as well as parental and community involvement.
