Safe and Caring Schools

Research

Project: Serious Learning-Disruptive Behaviour

Under the Government of Alberta's Safe and Caring Schools Initiative, the Faculties of Education at the Universities of Alberta, Calgary and Lethbridge conducted collaborative research to identify and assess the issues of serious learning-disruptive behaviours in Alberta schools. The research focused on:

  • the nature and extent of violent and serious learning-disruptive behaviour in Alberta schools
  • the perspectives of principals, teachers and children on the experience of violent and serious learning-disruptive behaviours
  • the nature and extent of programs and resources addressing the problem
  • programs and policies for dealing with violent and serious learning-disruptive behaviour.

The result of the research is a collection of readings that not only describe the nature and extent of disruptive behaviour and violence in Alberta schools, but also provide insight into the social, psychological and personal dimensions of disruption and violence in school settings. This book provides a foundation for the development of proactive solutions to the problems facing teachers and administrators in schools today.
